Topamax®

Topamax (Topiramate) is prescribed to help people who have seizures or migraines. Even though this drug has proved to be useful in normal adult patients, it is very dangerous to unborn babies. Topamax Birth defects like cleft lip and cleft palette have resulted from the use of Topamax by pregnant women

Research has discovered that taking Topamax while pregnant increases the risk of a child being born with a cleft palate.

On March 4, 2011 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after seeing this research agreed with the risks. The FDA put out an announced warning to pregnant patients taking Topamax (Topiramate) of the harms it can cause to their babies.

Birth defects like cleft lip and cleft palette as well as malformations in the genital of the male births (hypospadias) have resulted from the use of Topamax by pregnant women. The results of a study by the UK Epilepsy and Pregnancy Register show cause for concern and the FDA recommends against the use of Topamax by women of childbearing age. The FDA specifically notes the effect of the drug on fetal development in the first trimester, before many women know that they are pregnant.
