Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) manufactures GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. These products are used in dialysis treatments. FMC is one of the largest dialysis clinic operators in the world.
In 2010 nearly 1000 deaths were connected with the use of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte
Sadly, they failed to warn doctors and their patients of the risks of cardiac injury and death associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte.
In November 2011, FMC published an internal document. The document detailed that in 2010 nearly 1000 deaths were connected with the use of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte.
This information was only shared with FMC clinics. Other clinics where not warned of the risks of using FMC’s GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. They were not told how these drugs posed a great risk of injury and death to dialysis patients.
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Recalled by the FDA
In 2012 the FDA issued a CLASS 1 RECALL (the most serious kind of recall, where death could result from use) of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. However, these products are still on the market
FMC knew that GranuFlo or NaturaLyte created an increased risk of:
- Low blood pressure (hypotension)
- Heart attack or myocardial infarction
- Heart Problems
- Cardiopulmonary arrest
- Metabolic alkalosis
Despite this knowledge, FMC kept GranuFlo or NaturaLyte on the market. When they issued a warning it went only to FMC facilities. Other facilities were not warned. Since they were not warned, they continued to use GranuFlo or NaturaLyte not knowing they were putting their patients at risk of serious injury and death.
Profits over Safety?
Why would FMC wait such a long time to tell other dialysis centers not owned and operated by them of the possible problems with their product? Why allow other dialysis center patients to be exposed to such a potentially deadly drug? The short answer that many believe is FMC didn’t want to lose patients to their competitors.
