Yes, there are crooked cops out there

Over the years I have been asked, why sue a police officer or police department? They are only out there to help…right? Well, for the most part, that is true. Most officers and police departments are out there to make society a better place. They take pride in both their job and their community. However, that can’t be said about all of them! Crooked cops are not only movies

Some police officers and departments do some horrible things to people in the community. They lie, cheat and steal just like the criminals they are going after. Some officers, with the approval of the police department are out on the streets bullying residents and suppressing their rights. They have no care for those around them. They believe they are above the law!

Crooked cops are not only movies. From working at the DiCello Law Firm, I have seen cops blatantly lie on the stand. I have seen them make up lies to protect other officers. I have seen them go out of their way to make life hard for those who don’t bow down to them.

One case that sticks out in my mind is a case where an officer destroyed a person’s diabetic medicine kit. The officer did this because the person was of a different color. This was the case that really opened up my eyes. It led me to understand that there really are crooked cops out there! That bringing a lawsuit against an officer and a police department is the right thing to do. No one should be allowed to be above the law.

I now know that when a person calls me saying that a police officer has done something terrible to them, I listen. I don’t automatically dismiss it thinking they are a crazy person. I understand that they might need some serious help to make sure they do not feel like they have to live in fear in their own community.
